You can't look for a mattress in Australia without considering the Koala Mattress. This popular choice consists of two layers of foam: Koala's 'Kloudcell' foam, which is flippable and breathable, and a zoned support foam. Koala's foams are designed with open cells for maximum airflow, making it perfect for Australia's hot, humid summers.

One issue with traditional memory foam is its tendency to retain heat, especially in areas like Queensland, Perth, or the Northern Territory. To combat this, Koala’s development team created 'Kloudcell' to give you the pressure-relieving benefits of memory foam without the drawbacks of heat retention.

When it comes to partner disturbance, the Koala mattress is unmatched. No matter how much your significant other tosses and turns, you won't feel a thing. If you need to get up at night, your partner won’t wake up either, making this an excellent option for couples or light sleepers.

Koala also excels in delivery, with shipping times faster than Amazon. In major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide, the mattress arrives within 4 hours, while shipping to other areas remains fast and free.

As an added bonus, Koala has been around since 2015, offering excellent customer service and partnering with the WWF to donate a percentage of every mattress sale to koala preservation efforts. Additionally, Koala offers one of the best trial periods in Australia with a 120-night trial and a 10-year warranty.

The Emma Luxe Pro mattress is designed for sleepers who prioritize cooling, pressure relief, and luxurious comfort. The top layer features AirGrid technology, providing a unique “weightless” sensation by instantly bouncing back, making you feel like you’re floating. This innovative layer enhances airflow and prevents the common "sinking" feeling, ensuring continuous support throughout the night.

The AeroFoam layer works alongside the AirGrid to boost breathability and moisture evacuation, making it ideal for hot sleepers or the Australian climate. Beneath this, the MemoryAdapt foam contours to your body’s shape, distributing weight evenly and reducing pressure points on the hips, shoulders, and back. This makes the Luxe Pro particularly great for side sleepers who require extra support.

The Infinity springs in the core provide enhanced support across the entire mattress and help align your spine. These springs offer edge-to-edge support, so you won’t feel like you're falling off the sides, and they are environmentally friendly, using sustainable materials.

The mattress also includes a removable UltraDry cover, which is both breathable and easy to clean, making maintenance simple.

With a 150-night trial and 10-year warranty, the Emma Luxe Pro Mattress allows you to experience its luxury features risk-free. Its medium-soft feel (rated around 4.5/10) suits most sleeping positions, particularly for side sleepers, while still offering enough support for back and stomach sleepers

Emma Original (discontinuted)

Emma Original

The Emma mattress has won over 30 awards across Europe, and you can find it in 20 different countries, with over 400,000 people sleeping on it — impressive! And now, the wait is over, as it's finally available in Australia. But is the Emma mattress any good?

Yes! The quality German engineering that has gone into the bed has proven itself across Europe (Europe's most awarded mattress in 2019) and is now available here. We tried it for a few months, and the 3 layers of foam distribute your weight evenly because of the 7-zone support system, making it a dream to fall asleep on. For the price, it’s the best affordable medium-firm mattress.

We must say it feels firmer than your standard all-foam mattress at around a 6/10 medium-firm feel. Aussies often compare the Emma to the Koala, as they are similar in many ways. The Emma Original tends to feel firmer and more supportive, while Koala is softer and more breathable. Both have their strengths, but if you need more zonal support and prefer something a bit firmer, Emma is your best bet.

To double-check our experience wasn't biased, we looked through reviews on productreview.com.au and Choice, and the consensus was positive across the board regarding customer service, comfort, and price.

If you've got babies or toddlers, the Emma mattress is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 – Class 1 certified on all its layers, meaning it's eco-friendly and free from harmful substances. However, since the mattress is imported from Germany, there might be environmental concerns regarding its transport, but Emma offers same-day delivery in metro areas like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide.

Update: The Emma Comfort Adapt is the new upgraded version of the Emma Original, offering even more advanced features.
