The table above hopefully helped you in doing a quick comparison, now let’s elaborate and expand on a few key points:
Both are foam mattresses, so they are excellent at minimising motion transfer and reducing pressure when you sleep on them. However, you should note that Ecosa hasn’t improved or changed its design since 2015, while Koala has.
The Ecosa mattress is a three-layered mattress combining memory foam and foam. The layers are as follows:
The new Koala mattress is an all-foam mattress, that improves on the old design, making it even better at minimising motion transfer, and with better pressure relieving properties. It has three comfort layers:
Both mattresses are produced with certified foams that contain no harmful chemicals. Koala has layers designed to be flipped to change the firmness and with Ecosa you can switch the mattress layers around. If you do this for the Ecosa you lose the cooling gel foam on top for a firmer foam so it might mean you get hot while sleeping.
The Ecosa has a waterproof cover that's unique and saves you from getting a mattress protector, however, some reviewers say they don’t like the feel of it. Both mattresses have a zoned base which is excellent for spine alignment. But if we had to choose a winner it has to be the Koala mattress because of their continual development for better comfort.
It's a coincidence, Ecosa and Koala were founded at the same time in 2015 in Australia (or very close to each other anyways). Since their creation both have plenty of awards However, we can't find any big brands like ProductReview.com.au and Choice, mentioning Ecosa after 2019.
In terms of sinkage and bounce, both competitors are close to the middle of the pack. Although their foam layers provide a contouring effect, and their latex-like properties provide an element of bounce, neither one embodies the 'quicksand' feeling of memory foam nor a full-on bouncy latex feeling. Ecosa's adjustable firmness feature, however, allows you to almost entirely eliminate bounce by placing a layer of support foam on top (We don’t recommend this unless you like a firm mattress). Koala has a flippable top layer for adjustable firmness.
Motion isolation makes both mattresses shine. We're sure you've seen or at least heard of the viral wine glass videos a few years back. Ecosa and Koala both demonstrated their motion isolation features by balancing a glass of red wine (or three in the case of Ecosa) on one end of their mattress while someone jumped on the other end. In both cases, there were no red blotches on the white mattress surfaces: it was as if no one had stepped on them.
We don’t want to go to a store and wait around or buy a mattress online and wait a week for it to arrive. Luckily both brands offer free 4 hour delivery in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. And quick shipping everywhere else. In addition, both companies are running on a no-contact delivery basis during the COVID-19 pandemic, which means the delivery workers won't be able to enter your home and you won't be asked to sign anything upon delivery.
Both are excellent brands with an aggregated score of over ⅘ on every review platform from independent reviews. However, being a more popular mattress the Koala has a vast number of more reviews and usually a few percentages of a higher score.
You're faced with a tough decision when it comes to choosing between the Ecosa and the Koala mattresses. But our choice is the Koala because it has improved on its mattress design since 2015, it has more reviews(with a higher average), and it has a longer trial period.
That’s it for this comparison, hopefully, we have covered a few key points for you.
Happy shopping!
